So when I started this blog I was unsure of what I needed or what others needed but I knew something was off. In today’s time all you have to do is study people to see we as a society are super busy, distracted, and overwhelmed. There are 168 hours in a week, 24 hours per day, 60 minutes per hour. Are you making time count?
Often we are out we will see people on the phones even at dinner! I don’t get it. My son and I often joke that these people are all at the same table texting each other about what they want to eat. Lol. Yes it is a ridiculous thought but is it necessary to have our phones out when we should be living in the moment? When was the last time that you went out without your phone purposely? I have been trying to live in the moment and realize that my phone isn’t who I am.
That is what started my blog. LOVING who you are and improving who YOU want to be. For me, it is seriously about enjoying our life by getting back to the basics. What does that mean? I’m sure it is different for everyone, however, I miss the smell of Sunday roast in the oven (mine is in the crockpot!) to make the house smell wonderful. Sitting down to the dinner table to ask the all important questions of the day while eating dinner. Spending an afternoon gardening and being on the front porch sipping iced tea, playing games, planning our next adventure (miniature golf anyone?). Going to church on Sunday rather than missing church because there is a sport that a child has to attend. Washing the car by hand not because you can’t afford a car wash but because it is fun! Not to mention throwing the water bucket on someone!! I’m old fashioned in so many ways and I long for the days of old. For me it is about family and friends. Disconnecting from electronics. Winding down and taking to breathe.
I wanted to learn to do things that my Nanny (my grandmother) could do. She could grow anything and cook pretty much anything. One year for my 13th birthday after seeing The Love Boat they showed someone eating baked Alaska. I wanted one so bad that she made it for me. I remember that like it was yesterday because of the time and effort she put into it. Below is what baked Alaska is for those that don’t know. Those moments in my life are what have me longing for simpler times. A time where everyone understands that we are all different and we don’t go around hating someone else simply because they voted differently. A time when canning vegetables was standard. A time when keeping up with the Jones’s wasn’t even a thing. A time when we worked hard and played harder. That is what this blog is for me.
Baked Alaska is dish is made of ice cream placed in a pie dish lined with slices of sponge cake and ice cream then topped with meringue. The entire dessert is then placed in an extremely hot oven for a brief time, long enough to firm and caramelize the meringue but not long enough to begin melting the ice cream. Can we all say, “YUM!” I think I may need to take a cruise just to enjoy baked Alaska!
Are you making memories? Are you feeling stressed about the way life is going? Is there something today that you can do that will make your life what YOU want and need it to be?
As always I would love to hear from you! Comments, questions and ideas are welcome!
